Craft of Project Management — Part I

Project Management, in accordance with the requirements of the US Project Management Institute (PMI), is an application of management systems, an important tool for achieving organizational objectives. Project management, in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the Institute, where it supports improving Organization capacity to plan, organize, implement and monitor various activities, including the optimal utilization of its resources and potential.

Many researchers within the field of project management regard project as a set of interrelated, non-routine activities with specific beginnings and endings that are carried out by a person or organization to achieve specific, unique objectives within the framework of cost, time and planned quality standards. Therefore its management requires to apply activities and events that works in correlation with each other from planning, organizing, directing and monitoring for the purpose of optimizing the potential and resources of the Organization as well to achieve the objectives of the Organization efficiently and effectively and inconsideration of various environmental factors and variables surrounding the project.

In this article, the author highlights the need to consider project management as a craft and not just a functional title so that organizations select the right person to manage their projects in a manner that helps achieving their objectives within these projects, in order to benefit from of his practical and theortical experience in the field of construction project management. As in other professions, such as carpentry or medicine, project management is within carpentry or surgery, is a craft in itself.
